Manual Lymphatic Drainage - MLD

MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is an advanced therapy in which the practitioner uses a range of specialised and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow.

This stimulates the lymphatic vessels which carry substances vital to the defence of the body and removes dead, unwanted and damaging cells from our body such as toxins, viruses and bacteria.

Our suitably qualified therapists are registered with either MLDuk or The British Lymphology Society and have graduated from one of the limited number of schools teaching Vodder, Foeldi, Casley-Smith or FG-MLD.

MLD takes its roots from Winiwarter (1892) and Vodder (1923) and comes right up to date with Prof. JP Belgrado applying technology using ICG fluoroscopy to visualise the lymphatics in real time. Based on this feedback, a new method of MLD has been designed known as FG-MLD, Fill and Flush technique.

How can MLD help you?

In addition to the many medical benefits MLD can provide, the massage treatment is deeply relaxing and can enhance your general wellbeing.

It not only boosts your immune system but can help to reduce bloating, swollen ankles and puffy eyes. It is rapidly becoming a firm favourite with models and celebrities and can benefit those of us feeling stressed, tired or suffering persistent infections.

MLD is one of the cornerstones of managing primary and secondary lymphoedema (which may occur after cancer treatment). Your MLD therapist will also advise you on skin care, exercise and self-treatment. Measurements can be taken during your appointment for the supply of your compression garments. Other management options available are Kinesiology Taping and Deep Oscillation Therapy.

Furthermore, MLD:

Can be used to speed healing, reduce swelling and pain after surgery.

Promotes the healing of fractures, torn ligaments, muscle strains and lessens the associated pain.

Minimises or reduces stretch marks.

Promotes healing of wounds and burns and improves the appearance of old scars.

May improve chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and sinusitis.

Can reduce pain and the feeling of heaviness often experienced by patients with lipoedema.

The first visit will include a consultation during which, your MLD therapist will recommend the number and frequency of future sessions. Each session will last approximately one hour and where appropriate, the therapist will work in conjunction with your medical practitioner.
